Asset International Limited (Asset) is part of the HS Utilities Group of Hill & Smith Holdings plc, a decentralised manufacturing group specialising in serving the infrastructure, building and construction industries. Asset has exclusive rights to manufacture Weholite in the UK, Ireland and France.
Asset has been manufacturing Weholite pipe at its factory in Newport, South Wales since 1995. The business was established in 1953, originally manufacturing ARMCO road barriers, Multiplate corrugated steel structures and road barriers.
What is Weholite?
A Weholite HDPE pipe is a large diameter gravity/low pressure structured wall pipe made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) resin. With Weholite, raw material properties have been combined with advanced product technology to create a lightweight engineered pipe with superior loading capacity.
Weholite products are used to convey liquids or air, below ground level, above ground or under water in gravity applications underwater and gravity applications.
Weholite falls into the ‘structured wall’ family of pipes. Invented in the mid-eighties by KWH Pipe, who own the Weholite licence of which Asset International are a licensee, the Weholite brand is now protected by a number of worldwide patents, one being the continuous spiral winding process that allows a wide diameter range, creating pipes of between 400mm and 3500mm in diameter.
At our South Wales factory we are able to produce pipe lengths of up to 30 metres.
The profile design of our pipes allows us to utilise bespoke stiffness if needed, unlike more traditional materials like concrete. Essentially we can tailor the stiffness of our pipes to the suit the project. Pipes can be joined in a variety of ways from the non-watertight plastic band to the 100% watertight Teekay mechanical coupler or hand extrusion weld, to the full penetration machine weld for marine applications.
Standard Weholite can be used at a continuous operating pressure of 1 bar, with LP Weholite suitable for pressures up to 2 bars.
Weholite pipes hold a Kitemark and are manufactured in accordance with BS EN 13476-2: 2007, using state of the art extrusion equipment. With four production lines we are capable of producing more than twelve thousand tonnes per annum.
Asset offers a comprehensive design service. This is inclusive of structural calculation in accordance with BS EN 1295-1: 1998, “Structural design of buried pipelines under various conditions of loading,” in order to determine the deflection values and the FOS against buckling. Asset also offers flotation calculations combined with advanced finite element analysis results, in order to visualise the behaviour of the pipe under buried conditions. Furthermore, Asset offers extensive site and after sale support.
The Weholite factory boasts a specially equipped 6000m2 prefabrication unit. One of the real benefits of Weholite is its ability to be prefabricated into a vast array of bespoke components that provide unique solutions to the end user. Weholite is lightweight and can be installed easily on site, often removing the need for heavy lifting equipment and reducing health and safety risks.
The carbon footprint of Weholite is dramatically lower than that of its traditional material counterparts due to its light weight and ability to be efficiently transported.
The core competencies within our business, such as production and fabrication, transport, design and installation, give us a strong competitive advantage over traditional materials.
